已過不惑之年的阿平（小沢昭一飾）以製作色情音像製品為生，偶然機緣他和房東——松田理髮店的未亡人阿春（坂本スミ子飾）相戀，並成為了實質上的夫妻。阿春雖渴望新的生活，但是心中卻有著深深的忌憚。她相信丈夫去世那天降生的鯉魚便是丈夫的化身，因此鯉魚任何異常的表現都牽動著她敏感的神經。阿春還有一雙兒女，幸一（近藤正臣飾）是一名久久離不開母親呵護的高中生，女兒惠子（佐川啓子飾）則顯得過於獨立，且和阿平之間有著糾纏不清的曖昧。隨著阿春突然病倒，這個普通卻又奇怪的小家庭慢慢走向失衡……

Subu makes pornographic films. He sees nothing wrong with it. They are an aid to a repressed society, and he uses the money to support his landlady, Haru, and her family. From time to time, Haru shares her bed with Subu, though she believes her dead husband, reincarnated as a carp, disapproves. Director Shohei Imamura has always delighted in the kinky exploits of lowlifes, and in this 1966 classic, he finds subversive humor in the bizarre dynamics of Haru, her Oedipal son, and her daughter, the true object of her pornographer-boyfriend’s obsession. Imamura’s comic treatment of such taboos as voyeurism and incest sparked controversy when the film was released, but The Pornographers has outlasted its critics, and now seems frankly ahead of its time.
