第78屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮是美國電影藝術與科學學院旨在獎勵2005年最優秀電影的一場晚會，於太平洋時區2006年3月5日下午17點（北美東部時區晚上20點）開始在美國加利福尼亞州洛杉磯好萊塢的杜比劇院舉行，共計頒發了24個類別的奧斯卡金像獎（也稱學院獎）。頒獎典禮的舉辦時間比往年推遲了一星期，以免和2006年冬季奧林匹克運動會同台競爭。晚會通過美國廣播公司在美國直播，由吉爾·凱茨擔任製作人，路易斯·J·霍維茨執導。談話節目主持喬恩·史都華首度擔任主持人。兩星期前的2月18日，女演員瑞秋·麥克亞當斯在加利福尼亞州比佛利山的比佛利希爾頓酒店主持頒發了奧斯卡科技成果獎。

2006年1月31日，美國電影藝術與科學學院主席希德·甘尼斯（Sid Ganis）和女演員蜜拉·索維諾一起在加利福尼亞州比佛利山的塞繆爾·戈爾德溫劇院公布第78屆奧斯卡金像獎提名名單。《斷背山》以8項提名領跑，《衝擊效應》、《晚安，祝你好運》和《藝伎回憶錄》均以6項緊隨其後。獲最佳影片獎提名的5部電影都獲得了導演獎提名，自最佳影片獎提名電影數量限制在5部以來，這還只是第4次出現這種情況。
