Royal Tenenbaum（金哈克曼 Gene Hackman 飾）45歲那年夫妻分居，他一個人去住酒店，獨自撫養孩子的妻子Etheline（安潔莉卡休士頓Anjelica Huston 飾）把所有重心都放在了孩子才能的培養方面。不負眾望，他們的三個孩子個個 都是天才，她以此寫作了一本書——《天才一族》。
大兒子Chas（班史提勒 Ben Stiller 飾）12歲時就對生意運籌帷幄，初中就購置不動產，對財務有著超同尋常的理解。二女兒Margot（葛妮絲派特洛 Gwyneth Paltrow 飾）兩歲時被收養，這個話題被父親叨叨終身以致Matgot有點神經質地耿耿於懷。這個天才劇作家9歲時就贏得了勇士獎。 Richie（路克威爾森 Luke Wilson 飾）從三年級起就是冠軍網球選手，業餘喜愛組樂隊和收藏汽車模型以及繪畫，17歲轉做職業選手的他連續三年獲得美國公開賽冠軍。

幕後製作
魏斯安德森原是名哲學專業的學生，後來他與同班同學歐文威爾森發現了兩人共同的愛好：即對編劇和70年代經典電影的熱愛。於是兩人一起創作劇本，拍攝短片。
1994年他們拍攝了短片《脫線沖天炮》，因為資金困難，他們只能將其拍成13分鐘的黑白片，這部小小的作品幸運地得到了著名導演、製片人詹姆斯·L·布魯克斯（《盡善盡美》）的讚賞，在他的支持下安德森將其拍成了長片。影片贏得了廣泛讚譽，它就像六十年代的《逍遙騎士》和《週末狂熱》一樣成為90年代青年的一種文化象徵。馬丁·斯科塞斯更稱其為自己90年代最喜愛的電影之一。安德森則在MTV電影獎上獲得了"最佳新電影人"。

Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife, Etheline (Anjelica Huston), had three children—Chas, Margot, and Richie—and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. The Royal Tenenbaums is a hilarious, touching, and brilliantly stylized study of melancholy and redemption from Wes Anderson.
Repertory Pick: Wes Anderson’s Worlds
It's just a Wes kind of week. To coincide with next week's US opening of his Moonrise Kingdom, the Museum of the Moving Image in New York is launching a complete retrospective of Wes Anderson's feature films, called Wes Anderson's Worlds (May 18–27) . It's a rare chance to see all of these heartfelt and visually inventive comedies—most of them made in the wide CinemaScope format—on the big screen. Mark your calendars for Rushmore (May 18 and 20), Bottle Rocket (May 19 and 20 ), The Royal Tenenbaums (May 19 and 20), Fantastic Mr. Fox (May 26 and 27), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (May 26 and 27), and The Darjeeling Limited (May 26 and 27), as well as a special preview screening of Moonrise Kingdom (May 22), open to museum members only. As a bonus, Anderson has created a special video introduction that will be shown before each of the films. All this plus a special showing of Orson Welles's rarely projected masterpiece The Magnificent Ambersons (May 19), one of Anderson's favorite films and a direct influence on Tenenbaums.
