He was brought up partly in Canterbury ("The Garden of England") and partly in the South of France (where his parents ran an hotel). Educated at Kings School, Canterbury & Dulwich College he first worked at the National Provincial Bank from 1922 - 1925...

麥可·鮑威爾，英國著名導演，父親是Thomas William Powell，母親是Mabel，麥可自幼迷戀電影，他青少年時代有時在坎特伯雷度過，有時在法國南部度過（他的父母在那裡開了個旅館）。大學畢業後，麥可先在國立省銀行工作了三年（1922-1925），1925年他與Rex Ingram合作了Mare Nostrum（1926）。之後他在一些英國的電影工作室中從事多種多樣的幕後工作，鍛煉了自己的能力。在當時的社會環境下，麥可有著非常清醒的頭腦和眼光，他雖然是英國人，但他意識到多國電影人合作的重要性，他與熟知英國歷史文化的匈牙利猶太人Emeric Pressburger展開了合作，兩人在40到50年代製作了一系列重要作品。

1960年，麥可單獨製作的《Peeping Tom》受到了各方抨擊，以致他長期不能在英國工作。 60年代末期，科波拉和馬丁史柯西斯都想與他開展合作，這才使他“重新”被挖掘出來。 80年代，他在達特茅斯教學，1981年以高級導演身份加入Zoetrope工作室。他妻子是Thelma Schoonmaker。 1990年麥可因癌症逝世於他深愛的英國土地上。
